Mixing prints is something that has always scared me because it is such a fine line between cool and cooky. After my years in the Interior design industry, I’ve got a fail proof formula.
Scale is the most important thing! If you have two patterns that are similar in scale (think two striped patterns that are the same size), your eye won't know where to land and it creates confusion and ultimately is off-putting.
Use prints that have opposite scales for a harmonious blend every time. An example of this would be to use something with a smaller geometric pattern and style it with a larger geometric or organic print.
It doesn’t matter where the patterns go as long as they have a difference in scale to balance your eye. They don't necessarily have to be in the same color, but having a unifying color scheme is a great place to start. We'll dive more into mixing various colors in another blog post!
This rule can apply to anything in a room — sofa, pillows, rugs, wallpaper, art, etc. and can also be used in your outfits!
