My Three Rules For Teaching

My Three Rules For Teaching

I have taught a lot of students over the years. Most of them have little to no art experience. They often feel the need to preface class with, "I'm not creative, at all!" I assure them, and now you, that is not a problem. I have three simple rules for teaching because I want people to feel empowered and excited when they leave my class, not discouraged.

My rules: everyone is creative, all mistakes are fixable, and believe in yourself

Everyone Is Creative

Most people were told by a mean art teacher sometime in their youth that they weren't the creative type. Or they assume since they work in finance or medicine, they aren't creative. But creativity truly is for everyone. If you have ever solved a problem, made a meal, or told a joke, you're creative! Creativity is as simple as creating something from nothing. I know that sounds big, but I assure you it really is as simple as that. Creativity is also a muscle -- the more you use it, the stronger it gets. So a little nurturing of your creativity every once in a while goes a long way!

All Mistakes Are Fixable

Everyone is so hard on themselves about making a mistake, or even trying to avoid them in the first place. I totally get it. Again, it comes down to that mean art teacher who made you believe you had to be perfect at everything on the first try. So my rule is that all mistakes are fixable. I love the little imperfections that come out in making something. They are like a fingerprint from the maker. But also, we can fix anything. I promise there is no mistake too large that we can't learn from in class. Even if you leave with a piece that you are dissatisfied with, you have the skills and tools to improve on it the next time you try.

Believe In Yourself

This one sounds silly, but so many people assume they can't take my class because they aren't creative (see above), have never done art as an adult, or they think they don't have the skills they need. But that's what my classes are for! There are no fancy skills or prerequisites required for weaving or block printing. I am there to show you the techniques and guide you as you get to see your vision come to life. If you believe in yourself, you will be blown away by your end results!
